What can I do with a Skilled Visa?
Skilled visas allow you and any secondary applicants (spouse, partner, and children) included in your visa application to live indefinitely as permanent residents in Australia. Some skilled visas begin as temporary or provisional visas and then progress to permanent residency.
Australian permanent residents can:
- live and work in Australia on a permanent basis
- study in Australia at school or university
- receive subsidized healthcare through Medicare and the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBS)
- have access certain social security payments (subject to waiting periods)
- be eligible for Australian citizenship in usually about 4 years (subject to the residency eligibility criteria)
- sponsor other family members for permanent residence.
