Fiance Visas

Fiancé and Fiancée Visas

If you have met your perfect match, they may be able to sponsor you to immigrate either temporarily or permanently to Australia.
Join your partner in Australia under the Prospective Spouse Visa (also known as a Fiancé or Fiancée Visa).  The Prospective Marriage Visa enables fiancé(e)s of Australians or eligible New Zealand citizens to enter Australia and marry their spouse. This visa entitles the holder to apply for a Spouse visa after the couple have married.

Visa Requirements

What are the requirements for Fiancé or Fiancée Visa?

  • Must be over 18 years of age and your relationship with your Fiancé or Fiancée must be genuine and continuing.
  • Must show a mutual commitment to a shared life together.
  • You will be expected to demonstrate the nature of your relationship by providing a range of documentation. Couples who are engaged must have a genuine intention to marry and live together as spouses after the marriage.  The Department of Immigration and Citizenship may request you and your partner to attend an interview.
  • Your Australian partner must agree to sponsor you and provide a legal undertaking to support you during your first two years in Australia, should you not be able to support yourself.
  • You must enter Australia, marry your sponsor and apply for a Spouse visa all within this nine month period that the visa is valid.  To be eligible to apply for a Prospective Marriage visa you must demonstrate that you:
  • have personally known, i.e. physically met with your Australian sponsor; and
  • are engaged to marry your Australian sponsor in Australia; and
  • will marry your Australian sponsor within the visa validity period; and
  • intend to live together in a genuine married relationship; and
  • will apply for a Spouse visa in Australia within the nine month visa validity period.

You are also required to satisfy health and character requirements.  Australia has strict health and character requirements that must be met before any permanent visa of more than 12 months will be granted.  Applicants attempting to immigrate to Australia on an Australian Prospective Spouse Visa will be required to:

  • Undergo a medical examination and chest x-ray undertaken by one of a panel of doctors selected by the Australian authorities, and;
  • Obtain police certificates for all countries in which they have lived for more than 12 months in the 10 years leading up to the application.

You must apply for a Prospective Marriage visa from outside Australia and you must be outside Australia at the time the visa is granted.
